APPLE HARDWARE IPHONE EARLY IPHONE 12 PERFORMANCE TEST RESULTS SURFACE, SHOWS CONTRADICTORY INFORMATION

APPLE HARDWARE IPHONE
EARLY IPHONE 12 PERFORMANCE TEST RESULTS SURFACE, SHOWS CONTRADICTORY INFORMATION

UPDATE- iPhone 12 Geekbench Scores Surface
Shared by leaker Ice Universe on Twitter, new Geekbench scores for the standard iPhone 12 have surfaced online. However, there are 4 different test results, each producing different results. As we reported on Tuesday, these tests should be taken with a grain of salt until the devices have shipped, and are running public, optimized iOS versions.

Nonetheless, according to the best scores for the iPhone 12 referenced as “iPhone 13,2,” the new handset gets 1598 for single-core, and 3984 for multi-core in the same test. A separate test shows the iPhone 12 scoring 4028 in multi-core while another test shows it scoring as low as 2525 for multi-core.

The varying degrees of numbers further proves our earlier point that these tests should be taken with a grain of salt and not used as any final judgment or review of the device. All of the devices according to Geekbench are shown running iOS 14.1, given it has not shipped yet, these tests are likely being ran on test iPhone 12 models running diagnostic software, instead of optimized iOS versions.

AnTuTu results for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro have also surfaced. For the iPhone 12, it scores 564,899 vs. the iPhone 11’s 456,065. The iPhone 12 Pro scores 572,133 vs. the iPhone 11 Pro’s average score of 455,397 according to AnTuTu.

Despite not being in the hands of customers yet, early Geekbench test results for the iPhone 12 Pro running the A14 chip have surfaced online. According to the test results, the iPhone 12 Pro is equipped with 6GB of RAM and the 6 core- A14 processor. The iPhone 12 Pro according to the results scores 1590 for the single-core, and 3120 for multi-core.

Screen Shot 2020 10 14 at 3.43.10 PM
In comparison to the iPhone 11 Pro Max with the A13 Bionic chip, the 12 Pro scores 263 points higher in the single-core range, and down 183 for multi-core. The results show the iPhone 12 Pro running iOS 14.1, which is likely what the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro will run when they are shipped later this month. While there is a decrease vs. the 11 Pro Max, final performance for the 12 Pro once the device ships will likely score higher due to better software optimization.

Geekbench results for the unreleased 4th gen. iPad Air have also surfaced. The results between the 12 Pro and new iPad Air confirm that both are running on the same A14 Bionic chip, however the 4th gen. iPad only features 4GB of RAM vs. the 12 Pro’s 6GB.

Screen Shot 2020 10 14 at 3.49.02 PM
For single-core, the iPad scores 9 points less than the 12 Pro, but dominates in the multi-core test, scoring 1,142 points higher than the 12 Pro. Once again, these tests are early and should be taken with a grain of salt. No test results for the 12 mini, 12, or the 12 Pro Max have yet surfaced however similar performance can be expected between the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max.

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro will be the first iPhone 12 models to go live for pre-orders starting on October 16th with shipments starting on October 23rd. As for the 12 mini and 12 Pro Max, pre-orders will begin on November 6th and starting shipping on November 23rd. Learn more about the new iPhones here.

COUNTERPOINT RESEARCH: IPHONE 12 SALES FOR OCT-DEC TO BEAT IPHONE 11 SALES FOR IPHONE 11 BY 1%

Ahead of the iPhone 12 launch tomorrow, expectations are high for how the new iPhones will impact Apple’s long term iPhone shipments, and whether customers will ditch their current phones to update to the newer handsets.

Now less than 24 hours from the event, Counterpoint Research says that Apple’s sell-in volume will gro 4% year-over-year thanks to the iPhone 12 in 2020, however, overall the overall global smartphone market will retract by 10%.

New iPhones Sep Dec Shipments Launch Performance
Counterpoint Research
The biggest upgrade cycle for Apple in recent years was for customers switching from iPhone X and XS series to the iPhone 11 in 2019, coming in 2nd place according to Counterpoint Research was upgrades following the launch of the iPhone 7. According to the research, Apple’s October to December sales will exceed the iPhone 11 upgrade cycle for Sept. to Dec. in 2019 by 1%, despite missing out on the entirety of September and much of the October smartphone demand.

Counterpoint Research Director Jeff Fiedhack attributes the expected large upgrade cycle due to the addition of 5G support, more option display sizes, and varying price points. In addition, wider international efforts to make 5G more mainstream will help in driving sales as more customers seek to adopt the faster connection speed.

Apple will officially launch the iPhone 12 series during its “Hi, Speed” event tomorrow, at 10 AM PT. The 4 models of the iPhone 12 lineup rumored to be called the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max will all feature 5G support, flat edges, improved cameras, faster FaceID, and new color options.

Less than 48 hours away from Apple’s “Hi, Speed” event, all eyes are on the tech giant’s most anticipated launches of the year, the iPhone 12. Unlike in the past, COVID19 has pushed Apple to release this year’s new iPhone a month later than usual and to hold its typical in-person event digitally.

Apple will announce the iPhone 12 series which will include the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Each will sport 5G support, which by itself already has analysts and investors excited. As CNBC reports, “Investors and analysts have hoped for years that a 5G iPhone would represent a major upgrade and spur a big wave of sales”.

That immense optimism for 5G support, alongside possibly the biggest redesign to the iPhone since the iPhone X which introduced a nearly full-screen design, and all-new body design are causing analysts to call Tuesday’s event the “most significant iPhone event in years”.

Morgan Stanely analysts Katy Huberty writes in a note seen by CNBC that Apple will launch 4 new iPhones, confirming to earlier leaks and reports. According to Katy the smallest iPhone 12, the “mini” will feature a 5.4-inch screen that will match the size of the iPhone 6.

While Apple will announce its new handsets on Tuesday, what remains unknown is when they’ll be available to the public. Apple’s CFO Luca Maestri confirmed in the companies Q3 earnings call that the iPhone would go on sale later than normal. Apple leaker Jon Prosser who accurately reported the Oct. 13th event date says that iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 pre-orders will begin sometime in the week following the event, with shipments occurring the next week. As for the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, Prosser says that those will ship later in November.

It’s possible that some models will go on sale shortly after the event while others take a longer time to hit store shelves, most likely due to challenges designing and manufacturing ten of millions of devices during a global pandemic. Last year, ten days elapsed between the launch event and the first iPhones that went on sale.

CNBC

Luckily for us, all the uncertainty will come to an end when the clocks hit 10 AM PT on Tuesday, October 13th. Apple Terminal will be covering the event live right here on appleterm.com, and over on our Twitter.

Apple announces Apple Watch Series 6 with blood-oxygen sensor, brand new Navy Blue, and (PRODUCT) Red option

Today Apple unveiled its newest Apple Watch, the Apple Watch Series 6. The new watch debuted not alongside 2020’s flagship iPhones, a change in tradition for the tech-giant.
Standard rect

Series 6 remains visually unchanged besides two brand new colors, blue and (PRODUCT) red. The watch keeps the same design as the Series 5 with 40 and 44mm size options. Series 6 maintains the always-on display from Series 4 and 5 however it’s now 2.5 times bright in outdoor sunlight. Under the hood, the Series 6 sports an S6 processor which Apple says it 20% faster and based on the A13 Bionic chip in the iPhone 11.

The new system-in-package allows apps to launch 20%faster and maintains an 18-hour long day battery life. The new watch comes with fast charging, allowing it to be fully charged in less than 1.5 hours. Speaking of charging, the box will look different this time. Apple will not ship a power adapter in the box for the Apple Watch Series 6 or the Apple Watch SE as part of its environmental promises. However, the higher-end Titanium and Hermes models for the Series 6 do ship with a 5W power adapter.

The headlining feature of the new Series 6 is a blood-oxygen sensor that will be able to read using a new sensor how much oxygen your red blood cells are carrying. Users will be able to take their oxygen-level on demand, however, the Watch will also periodically check in the background when inactive, including during sleep. As Apple describes it:

Apple Watch Series 6 expands the health capabilities of previous Apple Watch models with a new feature that conveniently measures the oxygen saturation of the user’s blood, so they can better understand their overall fitness and wellness. Oxygen saturation, or SpO2, represents the percentage of oxygen being carried by red blood cells from the lungs to the rest of the body and indicates how well this oxygenated blood is being delivered throughout the body.

To expand the use of the new sensor, Apple is launching 3 new health studies that will explore how blood-oxygen levels can be used in “future applications”. Apple will partner with the University of California Irvine, and Anthem to study how blood oxygen can be used to manage and control asthma. In addition, Apple will work with Ted Rogers Center for Health Research and the Peter Munk Cardiac Center to study how blood oxygen cab used to manage heart failure.

Included in the suite of new fitness feature in the series 6 is an always-on altimeter which uses a more power-efficient barometric altimeter with GPS and nearby WiFi networks. This allows for the watch to detect plus or minus 1-foot elevation changes above ground. Apple also debuted 3 brand new Apple Watch bands, the first is the “Solo Loop”, a continuous band that has no hock and is made of soft silicon, or Braided yarn. Apple says it undertook a special UV treatment process to ensure the Braided band “creates a smooth, silky finish.”

A special UV treatment process used on the soft silicone of the Solo Loop creates a smooth, silky finish, while a precision-braiding machine interweaves the 16,000 polyester yarn filaments, made of 100 percent recycled material, with ultrathin silicone threads, giving unique stretchability and a distinct look to the Braided Solo Loop.

Apple

Apple Watch Series 6 will ship with the latest version of watchOS, watchOS 7 which will ship to customers on Wednesday, September 16th alongside iOS and iPadOS 14. The Series 6 is available for order today at apple.com and will begin shipping on Friday, September 18th. Series 6 with GPS starts at $399, and Series 6 with GPS and Cellular starts at $499

Boards to Transmit High-Resolution Images at Higher Speeds

Future iPhones May Feature LCP Circuit Boards to Transmit High-Resolution Images at Higher Speeds

Apple’s iPhones could, in the future, boast circuit boards based on liquid crystal polymer (LCP), which will allow them to transmit high-resolution at faster speeds.

DigiTimes report, which is based on information from industry sources in Apple’s supply chain, says the use of LCP-based flexible PCBs in-camera lens modules has been linked to the introduction of high-speed 5G in Apple’s iPhone lineup, as well as the popularity of live-streamed video and augmented reality apps.

LCP PCBs may also be massively adopted in ‌iPhone‌ camera lens modules in the future to support high-speed image transmission, the sources said, reasoning that image data will be increasingly complicated in the 5G era and high-speed transmission will be needed to allow high-resolution images in live streaming and AR applications.

The information was included in a report covering the increased activity of Apple’s supply chain partners to provide volume production of mmWave antenna boards for iPhones in 2021. mmWave is the fastest 5G network technology currently being rolled out by carriers.

Apple is expected to release high-end 6.7 and 6.1-inch iPhones with triple-lens cameras, alongside new lower-end 5.4 and 6.1-inch iPhones that are expected to feature dual-lens cameras.

At least some of those handsets are expected to support mmWave, but the report doesn’t specify when the iPhone is expected to include LCP-based camera module PCBs.

6.1-inch and 6.7-inch “iPhone 12 Pro” models will feature LiDAR; reports

6.1-inch and 6.7-inch “iPhone 12 Pro” models will feature LiDAR; report

Apple is widely expected to include the LiDAR sensor, first introduced in the 2020 iPad Pro into this year’s iPhone lineup. However, exact details over which out of the 4 new iPhone 12 models will get the sensor is unknown. Some have speculated that only the end highest-end “6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro” will, while others speculate that both Pro models, the rumored 6.1 and 6.7-inch will.

A new report today by Fast Company, citing sources within Apple, states that both the 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro models will come equipped with the LiDAR sensor, per the report:

This year’s iPhones will get the same kind of Sony lidar depth camera that Apple put in the 2020 iPad Pro it released in March, a source with knowledge of the company’s plans has told Fast Company. After planning the feature for years, our source says, the technology will show up in the top-tier “Pro” iPhone models Apple is set to announce this fall.

This year’s leaks say that Apple plans to announce four new iPhones sometime this fall. All four devices will reportedly support 5G wireless connectivity, but, as always, advancements to the camera features will also get top billing.

At the top of the line, a number of reports say, are two Pro-tier phones—a 6.1-inch device likely called the iPhone 12 Pro, and a 6.5-inch device likely called the iPhone 12 Pro Max. It’s these high-end devices that will feature the new lidar system, our source says.

Fast Company who has a limited track record reported in March of this year that at least one of this years new phones would feature a ToF (time-of-flight) 3D camera. It also reported that Apple is designing in-house 5G antennas for the 2020 iPhone.

Jon Prosser, one of the most reliable Apple leakers shared screenshots that he alleges comes from a PVT model of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, the 6.7-inch variant that shows it equipped with LiDAR. While those screenshots state LiDAR is coming on the highest-end model, it neglects to mention the lower-end Pro. In a separate tweet the next day Jon clarifies, saying that LiDAR will be present for the “iPhone 12 Pro”.

Both Jon Prosser and Bloomberg are reporting an October launch for these new handsets, outside of the typical September launch due to the coronavirus pandemic. In specfic, Jon is reporting that there will be an iPhone 12 event the week commencing October 12th, with preorders for non-Pro models happening the following week.

Jon is also reporting that Apple, via a press release will launch a new Apple Watch and iPad next week, the week of September 7th, and more specifically Tuesday the 8th.

What you should expect with Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra

What you should expect with Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra takes flagships to a whole new level. Everything on the phone is dialed up to 11; there's a stunning 6.9-inch AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, 12GB of memory as standard, Snapdragon 865+ chipset under the hood, and the S Pen has three times lower latency. Combine that with a powerful 108MP camera at the back and you get a phone that stands out from the pack. It's estimated at $1300

Samsung made the switch to 120Hz displays this year with the Galaxy S20 series, and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra retains this key feature. There hasn't been a single feature over the last two years that has affected day-to-day experience as much as 90Hz and 120Hz displays, and this is one feature that you have to use to truly appreciate.

The 120Hz display on the Note 20 Ultra is sublime, and Samsung made several changes to the AMOLED display tech to make it the best overall panel you'll find on any phone today. Samsung has led the industry in this area for several years now, and it continues to eke out more gains with each generation. The Note 20 Ultra is just 2.9mm taller than the Note 9, but you get a huge 6.9-inch display, and that's down to the thinner bezels at the top and bottom.

The slim bezels, along with a hole-punch cutout and a 120Hz screen, combine to give the Note 20 Ultra a distinct edge over the Note 9. There's just so much more on offer here, and you will love the changes that Samsung introduced with its latest flagship. Then there's the design. The Note 20 Ultra is available in Mystic Bronze, Mystic Black, and Mystic White variants, and the bronze model, in particular, stands out.

With the Note 20 Ultra, Samsung has switched to a new camera layout that sees the sensors highlighted more prominently. The camera housing protrudes a fair bit from the body of the phone itself, but the overall aesthetic is rather pleasing.

Let's talk about the cameras. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a 108MP primary camera along with a 12MP wide-angle lens and 12MP zoom lens that delivers 5x optical zoom. The Galaxy Note 9, meanwhile, has dual 12MP cameras. Having used the cameras on the Note 9 extensively over the last two years, I can confidently say that the 108MP lens on the Note 20 Ultra is a huge upgrade. You also get 8K video recording on the Note 20 Ultra and 720p slow-motion video at 960FPS.

The Note 20 Ultra packs a huge camera and internal hardware upgrades.

Then there's the internal hardware. While the Snapdragon 845 chipset on the Galaxy Note 9 is still going strong in 2020, the Snapdragon 865+ on the Note 20 Ultra is in another league. The powerful chipset coupled with the 120Hz screen leads to silky-smooth interactions in day-to-day use, and the Note 20 Ultra blazes through the most demanding of games with ease.

The Note 20 Ultra also comes with 12GB of RAM as standard, double that of the Note 9. The battery is larger at 4,500mAh, and you get 25W wired charging along with 15W wireless charging. The Note 20 Ultra even charges other devices at 5W wirelessly. There's Wi-Fi 6 connectivity as well, IP68 dust and water resistance, NFC, and stereo sound. Oh, and did I mention that the Note 20 Ultra has 5G connectivity? If you're looking for a device that will work over both Sub-6 and mmWave 5G networks around the world, this is the phone to get.

The S Pen is also picking up big upgrades and now has just 9ms latency. That makes it easier than ever to take down notes or just doodle on the Note 20 Ultra, and Samsung is also rolling out new software features to leverage the low latency.

Apple No Longer Signing iOS 13.6 Following Release of iOS 13.6.1

Apple released iOS 13.6.1 on August 12, and as is traditional, Apple has now stopped signing iOS 13.6, making downgrading to that version of iOS no longer possible.

The iOS 13.6 update was a major update that offered new features for the Health and Apple News apps, as well as support for the new CarKey feature.

iOS 13.6.1 is a bug fix update addressing issues with data storage, thermal management, and exposure notifications. It is the only current publicly available version of iOS that can be installed on iPhones and iPads.

Apple is known to stop signing older versions of operating systems after it releases a public update, as part of an effort to encourage users to keep their devices’ operating systems up to date.

Apple Confirms iPhone 12 Will Be ‘Available a Few Weeks Later’

Apple Confirms iPhone 12 Will Be ‘Available a Few Weeks Later’

Apple CFO Luca Maestri today confirmed that Apple is expecting to release its iPhone 12 lineup later than usual. His remarks came during today’s third fiscal quarter of 2020 earnings call.

Maestri said that Apple last year started selling iPhones in late September, but this year, Apple projects its new handsets will be “available a few weeks later.”

Maestri’s remarks confirm multiple rumors that Apple’s 2020 iPhone lineup would be delayed beyond their typical September readiness date. Most rumors have expressed October as the month the new iPhones would hit shelves.

While the availability of the 2020 iPhone 12 lineup may be delayed until October, we still might see an unveiling of the new models in September. Apple unveiled its iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR devices in September 2018, although the iPhone XR didn’t hit shelves until October.

Qualcomm on Wednesday shared its third-quarter earnings report and indicated that Apple’s 5G-capable 2020 iPhone 12 lineup may see a “slight delay.”

iOS 14 Detects Instagram Using Camera without User’s Permission

iOS 14 Detects Instagram Using Camera without User’s Permission

The long-awaited official iOS 14 update is still a few weeks away from its official release. However, Apple released a public beta version that anyone can download and use before beforehand.

And among all the new features that were showcased during this year’s WWDC, Apple also stated that it’s continuing its stance on keeping user information private and safe from any other person or company. This includes some new security features, including a new recording indicator.

If you have iOS 14, your iPhone will display a green dot next to your battery if any app is using your camera (orange for microphone), and if you go to the Control Center, you’ll see which app is triggering the indicator.

As it turns out, the recording indicator recently notified Twitter user KevDoy that Instagram was using their iPhone camera, even though they weren’t taking any pictures or using the in-app camera.

A spokesperson from Instagram told The Verge that this was only a bug that could have been set off because of the app’s Create Mode, which is accessible from the Instagram Camera. They also stated that swiping into the app’s camera from the main feed could also trigger the recording indicator. Currently, Instagram is working on fixing this issue.

Since iOS 14 is still in its early stages and hasn’t been fully released yet, this could potentially be a bug. Nevertheless, we’ve seen Facebook, the company that owns Instagram, has had problems in the past due to the way they managed it’s users’ information.

Instagram hasn’t been the only app that has experienced this bug. Other popular applications, such as Reddit, LinkedIn, and TikTok were exposed for having similar issues. Recently, iOS 14 detected that these apps were accessing and copying the users’ content on their clipboard. Although this doesn’t necessarily mean they’re spying on their users, the companies also stated that they were fixing this issue.

Apple patents a real-world color sampling sensor for the Apple Pencil

Apple patents a real-world color sampling sensor for the Apple Pencil

Apple Pencil is Apple’s best tools for creative minds, offering high-levels of precision and accuracy for drawing on the iPad. Apple faced criticism for releasing it in the first place given late-Apple CEO Steve Jobs said Apple would never release a stylus.

Nonetheless, the product has been a success. And today, thanks to a new patent, we have some hints on a potential future feature of the product. A new patent published by the US Patent and Trademark Office, spotted by first by AppleInsider suggests that a future Apple Pencil may have a real-life color picker sensor.

In practice, users would be able to point the sensor on the Apple Pencil to a real-life object, and then the sensor would detect the color, and automatically select the color on the device. This feature would change the game for many artists who often struggle with finding the perfect shade or tone of a specific color.

The patent in specific states photodetectors with lights that would be able to measure color channels in order to detect the color. It’s worth noting that companies, including Apple patent many ideas and technologies, however, that doesn’t mean for certain they will ever get released.

Third-Generation AirPods’ Standout Feature May Be New Slim Design

Third-Generation AirPods’ Standout Feature May Be New Slim Design

Apple may be moving in a new direction with its rumored upcoming third-generation AirPods. Supply chain sources hint these future AirPods could resemble the current AirPods Pro, according to a report from TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo obtained by MacRumors

AirPods New Design

On the outside, Apple’s future entry-level AirPods may ditch its existing look and adopt a design, much like the current AirPods Pro.

Most of the changes will be in the stem portion of the wireless earbud and not in the earpiece.

This new design is made possible by a system in package (SIP) that allows Apple to install the audio hardware into a smaller casing.

Apple may be shrinking the stem of future AirPods, providing the earbuds with a low profile fit in the ear, just like the AirPods Pro.

The AirPods and the AirPods Pro may look very similar on the outside, but the entry-level AirPods would lack the noise cancellation and other advanced features of the AirPods Pro.

AirPods Lite Rumors

According to Max Weinbach, Apple still may be working on a wireless alternative to its EarPods. These so-called AirPods Lite would be bundled along with iPhones in their retail packaging starting in 2021.

These wireless models may give iPhone owners a taste of the wireless audio but could be low-end enough that users will still be enticed to upgrade to more robust and feature-rich AirPods and AirPods Pro.

It’s also possible these “trashy wireless AirPods,” as Weinbach calls them, may never see the light of day. Recent rumors suggest Apple is pairing down its iPhone packaging as a cost-savings measure. To slim down its packaging, Apple may remove both the EarPods and the power adapter and ship the iPhone 12 only with a charging cable.

If this strategy is successful for the iPhone 12, the Cupertino company may continue this pared-down packaging going forward.

The company had released its Fujifilm X Webcam tool for Windows PCs in May and later announced that it would offer a Mac version in mid-July due to the “overwhelming response” of its customers when it released the app for PC.

Fujifilm joins Canon and Panasonic in developing software to add webcam functionality to their cameras. Users can connect the cameras to their Mac via a USB cable and use them as a high-quality webcam, allowing for much better quality during video calls.

The Fujifilm X Webcam software works with the X-T200 and X-A7, X-H1, X-Pro2, X-Pro3, X-T2, X-T3, and X-T4 cameras. Fujifilm X Webcam also works with all three GFX medium format cameras.

Fujifilm says the X Webcam software is compatible with Chrome and Edge browsers and offers support for Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Skype, and Messenger Rooms.

Ever since the release of the first Apple Watch it’s been pretty clear that Apple has been endeavouring to make an impact on the world through technology that can improve people’s health and wellness. Apple has hired legions of doctors working in secret labs to help research, develop, and test ways in which products like the Apple Watch can offer even better health features, and Apple CEO Tim Cook has gone on record as saying that he wants Apple’s health-related work to be its “greatest contribution to mankind.”

So it’s probably not surprising that with each new iOS and watchOS release, we hear of Apple’s plans to continue baking in more and more advanced health features, ranging from purely clinical features that monitor vital signs to broader applications that can improve a person’s overall health and well-being. Read on for 8 new health and wellness features that we expect Apple to introduce in iOS 14 and watchOS 7 this fall.
