Apple announces Apple Watch Series 6 with blood-oxygen sensor, brand new Navy Blue, and (PRODUCT) Red option
Series 6 remains visually unchanged besides two brand new colors, blue and (PRODUCT) red. The watch keeps the same design as the Series 5 with 40 and 44mm size options. Series 6 maintains the always-on display from Series 4 and 5 however it’s now 2.5 times bright in outdoor sunlight. Under the hood, the Series 6 sports an S6 processor which Apple says it 20% faster and based on the A13 Bionic chip in the iPhone 11.
The new system-in-package allows apps to launch 20%faster and maintains an 18-hour long day battery life. The new watch comes with fast charging, allowing it to be fully charged in less than 1.5 hours. Speaking of charging, the box will look different this time. Apple will not ship a power adapter in the box for the Apple Watch Series 6 or the Apple Watch SE as part of its environmental promises. However, the higher-end Titanium and Hermes models for the Series 6 do ship with a 5W power adapter.
The headlining feature of the new Series 6 is a blood-oxygen sensor that will be able to read using a new sensor how much oxygen your red blood cells are carrying. Users will be able to take their oxygen-level on demand, however, the Watch will also periodically check in the background when inactive, including during sleep. As Apple describes it:
Apple Watch Series 6 expands the health capabilities of previous Apple Watch models with a new feature that conveniently measures the oxygen saturation of the user’s blood, so they can better understand their overall fitness and wellness. Oxygen saturation, or SpO2, represents the percentage of oxygen being carried by red blood cells from the lungs to the rest of the body and indicates how well this oxygenated blood is being delivered throughout the body.
To expand the use of the new sensor, Apple is launching 3 new health studies that will explore how blood-oxygen levels can be used in “future applications”. Apple will partner with the University of California Irvine, and Anthem to study how blood oxygen can be used to manage and control asthma. In addition, Apple will work with Ted Rogers Center for Health Research and the Peter Munk Cardiac Center to study how blood oxygen cab used to manage heart failure.
Included in the suite of new fitness feature in the series 6 is an always-on altimeter which uses a more power-efficient barometric altimeter with GPS and nearby WiFi networks. This allows for the watch to detect plus or minus 1-foot elevation changes above ground. Apple also debuted 3 brand new Apple Watch bands, the first is the “Solo Loop”, a continuous band that has no hock and is made of soft silicon, or Braided yarn. Apple says it undertook a special UV treatment process to ensure the Braided band “creates a smooth, silky finish.”

Apple Watch Series 6 will ship with the latest version of watchOS, watchOS 7 which will ship to customers on Wednesday, September 16th alongside iOS and iPadOS 14. The Series 6 is available for order today at apple.com and will begin shipping on Friday, September 18th. Series 6 with GPS starts at $399, and Series 6 with GPS and Cellular starts at $499
