The biggest upgrade cycle for Apple in recent years was for customers switching from iPhone X and XS series to the iPhone 11 in 2019, coming in 2nd place according to Counterpoint Research was upgrades following the launch of the iPhone 7. According to the research, Apple’s October to December sales will exceed the iPhone 11 upgrade cycle for Sept. to Dec. in 2019 by 1%, despite missing out on the entirety of September and much of the October smartphone demand.

Counterpoint Research Director Jeff Fiedhack attributes the expected large upgrade cycle due to the addition of 5G support, more option display sizes, and varying price points. In addition, wider international efforts to make 5G more mainstream will help in driving sales as more customers seek to adopt the faster connection speed.

Apple will officially launch the iPhone 12 series during its “Hi, Speed” event tomorrow, at 10 AM PT. The 4 models of the iPhone 12 lineup rumored to be called the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max will all feature 5G support, flat edges, improved cameras, faster FaceID, and new color options.
